Municipal Water Pumping
The California Energy Commission supports that municipal water pumping
customers account
for over 5% of California’s energy use. California water and waste
water agencies spend over $500 million annually on energy costs.
Municipal water pumping applications include well pumping stations
and water supply systems (SIC 4941) for drinking, irrigation (SIC
4971) or other uses, as well as waste water treatment, and sewage
treatment facilities (SIC 4952) that collect, treat, and dispose
of waste.
The water agencies’ primary mandate is to supply adequate quantities
of water at sufficient pressure (with adequate reserves for fire
protection) to their customers. These agencies have 3 major types
of energy demands: use of their pumps, use of storage and back-up
generation. The majority of natural gas demand for public water agencies
is used for pumping water which is very distinctly summer peaking.
About 80% of water agency annual energy use occurs during the 6 summer
months.
