There are many things you can do to prepare your home for an earthquake. For starters, secure your water heater and other natural gas appliances so that they won’t move during an earthquake. You can prepare a complete earthquake kit for your home and car. You can also design an earthquake plan to ensure your loved ones are safe in the event a quake strikes when family members are at different locations: work, school, out of town, etc. (See Emergency Preparedness information.)
Additional information regarding seismic valves and gas service restoration after a valve activates may be found on The Gas Company Web site in the Regulatory section–Tariff Book, Rule 10, Section H, "Earthquake Valve Service."
If you have questions about seismic and excess flow valve installation requirements, contact your local Building and Safety Department.
