What is the seismic or excess flow valve’s total cost?

It varies by type and size of the valve, installation requirements and the company installing it.

Does The Gas Company recommend any specific seismic or excess flow valve manufacturer?

No. Contact your local Department of Building And Safety for their seismic valve requirements.

Where can I purchase a seismic or excess flow valve?

From supply retailers, licensed plumbing contractors, or the valve manufacturer. Contact your local Department of Building And Safety for their seismic valve requirements.

Can I install the seismic or excess flow valve for my home myself?

Contact your local Department of Building And Safety for their seismic or excess flow valve installation requirements. If installation requires gas service closure, you must contact The Gas Company to shut-off the service and restore service when installation is completed.

Under the regulations of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), General Order 112-E, only The Gas Company or its certified contractors are authorized to operate the gas service shut-off valve.

Gas service shut-off and restoration of service orders can be scheduled by contacting us at 1-800- 427-2200.

Will The Gas Company install a seismic or excess flow valve for me?

No.

May I use a contractor?

Yes. You may hire a licensed, qualified professional to install the seismic or excess flow valve on your houseline. If installation requires gas service closure, you must contact The Gas Company to shut-off the service and restore the service when installation is completed.

What else can I do to further prepare my home for an earthquake?

There are many things you can do to prepare your home for an earthquake. For starters, secure your water heater and other natural gas appliances so that they won’t move during an earthquake. You can prepare a complete earthquake kit for your home and car. You can also design an earthquake plan to ensure your loved ones are safe in the event a quake strikes when family members are at different locations: work, school, out of town, etc.  (See Emergency Preparedness information.)
