What should I do after an earthquake?
After an earthquake or similar emergency, we encourage customers to check for gas leaks. We advise customers to turn off their gas meter only if they smell a gas odor, hear it escaping, or have another indication of a leak. Do not turn it back on yourself - only Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas®) field employees are allowed to turn on the gas to the meter. Call SoCalGas to turn the gas back on, to relight the pilots and service your appliances.
Customers are encouraged to know where their gas meter is located and to keep a 12-inch or larger wrench available in their emergency preparedness supplies or near their gas meter.
