Community Outreach

SEE WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DOING TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITIES IN OUR SERVICE AREA.

In 2021, SoCalGas donated more than $9 million to nonprofit organizations throughout our service area to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve.

Together, the Sempra family of companies – including our sister utility San Diego Gas and Electric and the Sempra Energy Foundation – stepped up with a total of nearly $30 million to those in need in 2021. We want to do everything we can to support our community during this time, especially the most vulnerable. In 2021, we donated more than $1.2 million to nonprofit organizations throughout our service area to support the region's workforce, feed the hungry, and provide bill assistance to customers most affected by COVID-19.

Our efforts aim to help those in our community who may have been laid off and individuals and families facing food insecurity during this time. We also increased our funding for the Gas Assistance Fund, a program managed by United Way of Greater Los Angeles that helps families in need pay for their utility bills.

    • Fueling Our Communities: A campaign we created in 2020 to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, we were able to bring the program back and we invested an additional $325k. We partnered with eight charities to provide free meals, groceries, and restaurant gift cards to thousands of Angelenos. The program ran through the spring of 2021 and served 20 communities across Los Angeles County.

    • Weingart East LA YMCA: We partnered to help distribute 1,000 turkeys and Thanksgiving bags containing canned goods, vegetables and drinks to families in Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles.

    • United Service Organizations: Our employees partnered to assemble 500 food kits for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week at Bob Hope USO in Ontario. Our grant helped provide a bag full of holiday food items to local active service members and their families ahead of Thanksgiving.

    • In November 2021, SoCalGas joined the Union Station Homeless Services (USHS) at their 51st annual Dinner in the Park event to provide nearly 350 prepared Thanksgiving meal supply boxes for those in need. Each supply box included all the ingredients needed to create a delicious Thanksgiving meal in the comfort of their own home. Each recipient received a turkey, stuffing, corn, and more.

    • Increased community investment among African American and Black nonprofits to help the communities they serve.

    • Focused grants to help address the digital divide, including computer equipment and wifi, as well as distance learning.

    • Provided additional scholarships to students studying STEM majors with the opportunity to gain a paid summer engineering internship. In 2021, SoCalGas awarded more than $235,000 to 56 students from Central and Southern California. 86% of the scholarship recipients were students of color.

    • Sponsored workforce training programs with an opportunity for jobs at SoCalGas. Through our partnership with Los Angeles Urban League, their Construction Career Academy helps people learn construction and utility trades in order to pass union required exams. We have successfully hired 9 participants from the program. Click here to watch a short video and learn more about our partnership.

    • Partnered with the California Restaurant Foundation and other utilities across the state to launch the Restaurants Care Resilience Fund. The fund provided grants of up to $3,500 to single-unit restaurants, with priority given to woman- and person of color-owned restaurants. The foundation also provided restaurants with support services and resources to improve their business for the long-term.
