Above-Ground Pipeline Inspection – Patrols are performed on an annual or twice-a-year basis, depending on the location of the facility, to look for indications of missing pipeline markers, construction activity and other factors that may threaten the pipeline.
Cathodic Protection Maintenance – Cathodically protected pipelines are monitored on an annual basis to verify that the cathodic protection system is functioning properly. Above-ground piping is inspected for corrosion at least once every three years. Cathodic protection is a technology that uses direct electrical current to counteract any external corrosion of a metal pipeline. External corrosion of pipelines is controlled by coating all pipelines and by utilizing the cathodic protection process.
Locate and Mark Transmission Lines – Transmission pipeline locations are located and marked when any excavation activity is to take place in the vicinity of the pipelines. Underground Service Alert (Call 811 Before You Dig ) will alert its members that excavation activity will be taking place, and per government code 4216, we will locate and mark the location of our pipelines. In addition, a SoCalGas® transmission crew will stand by during construction activity.
Mobile Leak Survey (Tranmission Lines) – SoCalGas conducts leak surveys of its pipelines using combustible gas detectors at specified frequencies. Optical methane detectors and mobile Dectopack infrared gear are mounted on company vehicles and are driven above transmission lines to detect any natural gas leaks. Any leak identified is prioritized, continuously monitored and repaired promptly.
Remote Control Valves – SoCalGas’ system contains about 700 valves on the transmission pipelines that enable us to control the flow of natural gas or, if necessary, shut off the flow of natural gas in a pipeline. The system of valves enables us to isolate portions of our system to perform routine maintenance or repair of leaks. Valves can be manually opened or closed and some are remotely controlled.
Valve Maintenance – Valves critical to the isolation of a pipeline segment are inspected once each calendar year and serviced for adequate lubrication and valve operation and proper valve identification.
Valve Service and Operation – Valves critical to the isolation of a pipeline segment are inspected once each year and serviced for adequate lubrication and valve operation and proper valve identification.
Vault Maintenance and Inspection – SoCalGas performs routine maintenance and inspection on all underground vaults within the service area, which typically contain pressure-regulating or pressure-limiting equipment. Inspection includes proper operation of ventilation equipment, vault structural conditions and removal of water, trash or other foreign substances.
