Cleaner Goods Movement for Tomorrow
On December 11, 2012, SoCalGas® partnered with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to host a free webinar titled “Cleaner Goods Movement for Tomorrow: Natural Gas to Power Ships, Trains and Trucks.” This webinar highlighted the burgeoning opportunity for natural gas as a cleaner alternative fuel to power ships, trains and heavy-duty trucks associated with goods movement activities.
Goods movement is integral to Southern California’s economy and this sector is expected to continue to grow. It's critical that cleaner fuels and technologies be used by the ships, trains and trucks in the future to reduce the emissions generated by this sector. The ships, trains and trucks that move these goods typically rely on large, high- horsepower engines that burn diesel or similar fuels but they can be powered by cleaner natural gas.
The webinar presenters included:
Normand Pellerin, assistant vice president for environment and sustainability at Canadian National Railway. Pellerin spoke of his company’s recent experience deploying a pilot test with locomotives fueled by natural gas in Canada. Natural Gas for High Horsepower Engine (PDF)
Cliff Hill, director of marine operations for Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE). Hill presented his company’s efforts and plans to add marine vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) to its fleet. TOTE LNG Conversion and Construction (PDF)
Cliff Gladstein, president of Gladstein, Neandross and Associates. Gladstein provided an overview of the emerging opportunity to use natural gas to power a variety of high-horsepower sectors, including rail, marine and trucking. Natural Gas for Ships, Trains and Trucks (PDF)
