Gills Onions

See how Gills Onions uses on-site generation to reduce energy consumption and save money.

Gill's Onions is one of the nation’s largest, family-owned onion growers, and operates one of the largest, most innovative and sustainable fresh-cut onion processing plants in the world.

Each day, they send 300,000 pounds of onion waste to an anaerobic digester, where it is converted into ultra-clean electrical energy and high-value cattle feed. Gill's Onions’ innovative and cost-saving technology can produce enough biogas to power 460 homes with renewable energy through two 300-kilowatt fuel cells.

Through on-site generation, they've reduced their energy consumption and reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30,000 tons per year – the equivalent emissions of 5,000 cars.
