SoCalGas® is consistently looking for opportunities to reduce our environmental impact as well as the impact of our customers. Our Research, Development and Demonstration (RD&D) department collaborates with customers, businesses and manufacturers in search of potential projects to test new products and technologies that will save energy and reduce emissions. These projects not only help meet state and federal requirements for reducing greenhouse gases and emissions but can create huge cost savings for our customers.

Materials-Based Hydrogen Storage for Heavy Duty Vehicles

SoCalGas® invites you to a webinar, featuring Sandia National Laboratories, that will cover nanoscale metal hydride composites for efficient storage of hydrogen on board heavy-duty vehicles (HDV). These materials have the potential to deliver hydrogen at the right pressure and energy-density required to meet Department of Energy (DOE) targets. Hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles can help decarbonize the transportation sector and reduce emissions in high-traffic corridors such as the South Coast Air Basin.

In this webinar, Dr. Mark D. Allendorf and Dr. Vitalie Stavila of the DOE Hydrogen Materials – Advanced Research Consortium (HyMARC) will discuss the development of light-weight materials based on metal hydrides that could enable the use of light-weight alloys to construct storage tanks that operate at relatively low pressure (maximum 100 bar). This work builds on research conducted by the HyMARC.

Biomethanation: Using Natural Organisms to Convert Waste CO2 and Renewable H2 to RNG for Long-Duration Energy Storage and Decarbonization.

SoCalGas® and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) invite you to a webinar to learn more about a new technology that uses naturally-occurring microorganisms to transform renewable hydrogen and carbon dioxide into renewable natural gas. This process, known as Biomethanation, could aid in decarbonizing the natural gas grid.

In this webinar, Dr. Kevin Harrison, Senior Engineer at NREL, will show how the SoCalGas/NREL collaboration fits into the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen@Scale and Waste-to-Energy initiatives, as well as how the collaboration has helped develop technology and catalyze interest in power-to-gas.

SoCalGas and C-Zero present: Co-producing Hydrogen and Valuable Solid Carbon from Natural Gas

SoCalGas and C-Zero invite you to a webinar to learn about a new process for transforming natural gas into hydrogen and a solid carbon co-product.

In this webinar, Zach Jones & Dr. Fadl Saadi will introduce C-Zero’s technology and the role that methane pyrolysis can play in decarbonizing our existing natural gas infrastructure. We will also discuss the recent work that C-Zero completed with assistance from SoCalGas, and how it fits into C-Zero’s greater effort to create a large-scale prototype demonstration system.

SoCalGas RD&D 2022 Research Plan – Public Workshop (online)

SoCalGas hosted a public workshop online to present the results of the 2020 Research, Development & Demonstration (RD&D) program, review 2021 RD&D Activities, and obtain input from stakeholders, such as the California Energy Commission, Gas Technology Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy, and other organizations engaged in gas research and development, regarding intended RD&D spending for the 2022 calendar year.  

This workshop was held in accordance with the October 1, 2019 Decision Addressing Southern California Gas Company’s Test Year 2019 General Rate Case (D.19.09-051 at pp. 378-379).

This webinar will provide an overview of the project results from a field, laboratory, and market evaluation of a “fourth-generation” pre-commercial natural gas-fueled heat pump water heater.

Five prototype units were installed in single-family homes in the Los Angeles Basin and monitored for over a year. Parallel laboratory evaluation and testing was performed by SoCalGas at their Engineering Analysis Center.

The results from these field and lab efforts were expanded through model development in preparation for supporting commercialization of the technology. A market assessment was conducted to identify opportunities for, and barriers to, market adoption.

This project was led by GTI on behalf of the California Energy Commission (CEC) and SoCalGas.

SoCalGas® RD&D and Opus 12 Present: “Utilization of CO2 Emissions to Make Renewable Fuels and Chemicals"

Opus 12, a clean-energy startup with its origins at Stanford University and the prestigious Cyclotron Road program at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, recently announced the advancement of a new electrochemical technology that converts the carbon dioxide content in raw biogas to pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, a critical improvement in the science of upgrading waste emissions to renewable gas.

The single-step process is designed to use renewable electricity, and thus also provides a way for long-term storage of excess wind and solar power. The twelve-month research and development effort was funded by SoCalGas and PG&E and builds on the success of an initial feasibility study in 2018.

In this webinar, Dr. Etosha (Eee-tah-sha) Cave, co-founder and Chief Science Officer at Opus 12, will discuss the science behind electrochemical CO2 reduction, how additional development would make this technology cost-competitive with other biogas upgrading processes, and how this work fits into Opus 12's larger mission to convert CO2 to useful products.
