RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DEMONSTRATION (RD&D)

Working to reduce the environmental impact for all of us.

SoCalGas® is actively working towards the goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and delivery of energy by 2045. Innovation and the rapid development of new technologies are vital to our success. Our Research, Development, & Demonstration (RD&D) Program plays a key role in this effort by developing and demonstrating transformational products and technologies that promote decarbonization across the natural gas value chain and a diversified portfolio of clean energy sources, distributed networks, tools, and applications.

Cleanie Award

We are honored to receive the 2022 Cleanie Silver Winner Award for Clean Energy Investment Leader of the Year. Among a field of major global companies, SoCalGas RD&D was identified as a leader in sustainable business priorities. A cornerstone of this prestigious award is the degree to which the winner’s transformations have the “potential to create positive impact at scale in their sector and beyond.” Our employees, business partners, and community leaders are proud to be recognized by The Cleanie Awards for making a meaningful difference in our industry, communities, and beyond.

Cal State LA Drives Upward Mobility Through Senior-Year Engineering Program

We worked with Cal State LA’s engineering program to help students sharpen their professional skills. The Capstone Senior Design Program presents students with the opportunity to review current real-world engineering challenges. This program helps students become critical thinkers and gain valuable experience that they can carry with them into their careers.

Hydrogen-Fuel-Cell Drones Enable Long-Range Pipeline Inspection

We have begun exploring the use of zero-emission, hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered drones with Korean firm Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) and GTI, an R&D organization that develops and demonstrates new energy technologies. Zero-emission drones lay the groundwork for a companywide transition to hydrogen-fuel-cell powered aircraft to improve the efficiency of pipeline inspections.

Our Recent Webinar

Hybrid Direct Air Capture of CO2 – Water-Positive Carbon Dioxide Removal

SoCalGas and Avnos recently hosted a webinar about Avnos’ innovative Hybrid Direct Air Capture (HDAC) of CO2 technology, which produces water as it removes CO2 from the ambient air. The result is a highly resource and cost-efficient approach to DAC that can be deployed virtually anywhere in the world as both a decarbonization and water stress solution.

We also discussed ongoing work at Avnos with assistance from SoCalGas RD&D, Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL), the U.S. DOE Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), and the U.S. Office of Naval Research to design, build, and operate field-deployed pilot HDAC systems.
