The CPUC has approved SoCalGas' request to track costs for advancing the first phase of Angeles Link, what could be the nation's largest clean, renewable hydrogen energy pipeline system, that could deliver clean, reliable, renewable energy to the Los Angeles region. As envisioned, the Angeles Link could support the integration of more renewable electricity resources like solar and wind and would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electric generation, industrial processes, heavy-duty trucks, and other hard-to-electrify sectors of the Southern California economy. Angeles Link could also significantly decrease demand for natural gas, diesel, and other fossil fuels in the LA Basin, helping accelerate California’s and the region's climate and clean air goals.

About Angeles Link
Green hydrogen, which we also refer to as clean renewable hydrogen, is produced entirely from renewable electricity, and it expands our renewable energy storage capabilities, allowing us to utilize more renewable electricity and avoid curtailment while reducing emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors.
Angeles Link could:
- Displace up to 3 million gallons of diesel fuel per day, or 1 billion gallons annually, and enable the conversion of up to four natural gas power plants to run on clean renewable hydrogen.
- Eliminate nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) equal to removing 3.1 million cars off the road annually.
- Generate billions of dollars in new clean energy investments in the LA Basin and create thousands of new union jobs.
Angeles Link would serve hard-to-electrify industries like dispatchable electric generation, heavy-duty trucking, and industrial processes. As contemplated, the Angeles Link would deliver green hydrogen in an amount equivalent to almost 25 percent of the natural gas SoCalGas delivers today. Building the system to provide a clean alternative fuel could, over time and combined with other future clean energy projects, reduce the natural gas demand served by the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility, facilitating its ultimate retirement while continuing to provide reliable and affordable energy to the region.
How Does It Work?
-
Start with 100% renewable electricity
Utilize renewable electricity that is on the grid, new build or being curtailed to provide power to electrolyzer.
-
Use it to make green hydrogen with electrolyzers
Electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen -- with virtually zero greenhouse gas and criteria pollutant emissions.
-
SoCalGas to deliver it into LA Basin by pipeline
We will use our expertise in pipeline infrastructure to safely deliver green hydrogen from outside of LA Basin to industries that need it most.
-
Use it to decarbonize sectors that can’t be plugged in
Southern California can use green hydrogen to decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors such as dispatchable electric generation, industrial processes, and heavy-duty transportation while driving job creation.
Why Us?
With existing relationships to thousands of industrial end users, an extraordinary workforce to do the job safely, and a regulatory framework that promotes a transparent and robust stakeholder process serving the public interest, we are well positioned to help California capitalize on this pioneering opportunity to build America’s largest green hydrogen hub. Angeles Link is a natural extension of SoCalGas’ role as an industry leader in hydrogen.
