Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy

ASPIRE 2045: Sustainability Strategy

Innovating our business to create lasting benefits for stakeholders by doing the right thing, championing people, and shaping the future.

ASPIRE 2045 is our strategy to further integrate sustainability across our business. It builds on our March 2021 Climate Commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and delivery of energy by 2045, and focuses on the five areas below where we can have a strong, positive impact on our communities, our company, and our stakeholders. For more information on SoCalGas’ support of California’s clean energy goals read the full 2023 Corporate Sustainability Report here.

Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy

Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy

The transition to clean energy is an environmental and societal imperative. SoCalGas is accelerating the transition by advancing the use of lower-carbon or zero-carbon fuels, such as hydrogen and renewable natural gas, in support of our customers and California’s climate goals.

Converting waste to energy

To help achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and delivery of energy by 2045, we plan to deliver 20% renewable natural gas (RNG) to core customers by the end of 2030. RNG can be produced by capturing the gas emitted from organic waste in landfills, wastewater treatment plants and livestock farms.

Innovating How Clean Energy Is Created And Delivered

Our [H2] Innovation Experience is North America's first-ever clean hydrogen-powered microgrid and home. This project demonstrates how carbon-free gas made from renewable electricity can be used in pure form or as a blend to fuel clean energy systems and communities of the future.

Investing In Research, Development And Demonstration (RD&D)

SoCalGas’ RD&D program supports the development of breakthrough technologies, like linear generation, a no-combustion, high-efficiency electric generation technology that can run on a variety of fuels – natural gas, renewable natural gas, hydrogen, or ammonia -- with near zero emissions. The technology is now in use in commercial buildings, supermarkets, cold storage facilities, and for EV charging.

Clean Fleet, Lower Emissions

SoCalGas continues to invest in advanced and innovative fleet vehicles, such as hydrogen fuel cell, electric and renewable natural gas-powered vehicles. With more than 38% our fleet vehicles already running on clean fuel, we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping to improve air quality in our communities.

Leak Detection With Aerial Methane Mapping

SoCalGas uses ground-breaking innovation in detection technologies, such as helicopter-mounted LiDAR, to promote public and system safety. We began using drones – including testing some of the first-of-its-kind to use hydrogen-powered drone technology – to map and detect methane, allowing the company to target methane reduction more quickly and accurately.

    Achieving Methane Emission Reductions

SoCalGas is committed to helping to achieve the state's methane emissions reduction goals. In 2021 we reduced methane emissions by 37% – passing the state’s 2025 goal of a 20% reduction and nearing the state’s 2030 goal of a 40% reduction, years in advance.

Fuel Cells Reduce Company Facilities’ Emissions

Powering two of our largest facilities with fuel cells has helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, utility costs, and provided uninterrupted power. Leveraging fuel cells supports our plan to achieve net zero energy for SoCalGas buildings. It also demonstrates how customers can reduce their carbon footprints.

Helping Customers Reduce Energy Use, Save Money

The most affordable unit of energy is the one you don’t use. That’s why energy efficiency programs are proven ways to help customers reduce energy use, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Learn more about energy efficiency programs >

  • Energy Efficiency Customer Savings

In the last five years, our programs have saved customers nearly $360 million and more than 240 million therms, or enough natural gas to power over 600,000 homes for a year, which helps advance our plan to exceed State energy efficiency goals each year. The programs have also reduced nearly 1.3 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions – equal to removing 284,000 cars from the road.

Empowering Customers To Manage Energy Use

Advanced meters provide customers with detailed consumption information and tools so they can better understand energy usage, achieve energy savings goals and save money. Because the consumption information can lead to increased conservation efforts, it may help reduce GHG emissions.

  • Operating Our Pipeline System Safely And Reliably

SoCalGas is deploying the largest capital investment in the company’s history, including a five-year plan that invests in modernizing our pipeline system. These infrastructure upgrades enhance public safety, system reliability and reduce emissions.

Safe Digging Program Helps Prevent Pipeline Damage

Digging near buried pipelines while planting, doing yard maintenance, or during demolition work can damage pipelines, cause injury, property damage and loss of utility service. Our damage prevention program has helped decrease the pipeline excavation damage rate by more than 19% since 2020, supporting public and infrastructure safety.

Enhancing Safety Through Innovation

SoCalGas’s high-tech fiber-optic sensor system continuously monitors portions of our transmission system to detect changes in temperature, movement, and sound. When triggered, a digital alert is sent to a central monitoring control center for early detection, assessment, mitigation, and prevention of potential damage, providing significant value to infrastructure and public safety.

Emergency Preparedness

Natural disasters and other emergencies can strike without warning.  SoCalGas’s Emergency Management and Response helps protect the public, our infrastructure, employees, and contractors if an incident occurs. From employee training and stakeholder education, to responding to customer needs, working alongside first responders, and making sure our system operates safely and reliably, we stand prepared.
