Brotherhood Crusade and SoCalGas Celebrate the Unveiling of the Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. Community Garden in South Los Angeles
Oct 30, 2025
LOS ANGELES – Brotherhood Crusade and Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today celebrated the official unveiling of the Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. Community Garden, a vibrant new green space located at Brotherhood Crusade’s headquarters in South Los Angeles. The groundbreaking of the garden was made possible through a donation from SoCalGas, reflecting a shared commitment to community wellness, environmental stewardship, and food security.
The unveiling event welcomed community members, local leaders, and students to experience the garden’s features firsthand, including a fire pit for healing circles, a wishing tree for reflection and aspiration, and expanded Teaching Gardens that promote nutrition and urban agriculture. The garden will be open to the public, offering a safe and welcoming space for learning, healing, and gathering—benefiting hundreds of South Los Angeles families.
“This is by far one of my favorite projects in my 40 years of working in South Los Angeles,” said Charisse Bremond, president and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade. “Thanks to SoCalGas’s generous support, we’ve created an oasis where our youth and families can grow, learn, and dream. This garden honors Danny Bakewell’s legacy and will serve as a living classroom and sanctuary for generations to come.”
Named in honor of Danny J. Bakewell, Sr., the garden stands as a living tribute to his decades-long commitment to social justice and community empowerment. As the Brotherhood Crusade’s current chairman of the board, Bakewell has dedicated his life to uplifting underserved communities across Los Angeles. His visionary leadership continues to inspire initiatives that promote equity, opportunity, and pride throughout South Los Angeles and beyond.
“Danny Bakewell has always inspired us to ‘do something’ for our community,” said Los Angeles City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who attended the unveiling. “This garden is a testament to his enduring impact and a symbol of hope and resilience for South Los Angeles.” “This day marks a milestone in our shared vision for a healthier, greener South Los Angeles,” added Councilmember Curren Price. “We thank SoCalGas and Brotherhood Crusade for their unwavering dedication to this project.”
“SoCalGas is proud to support initiatives that uplift the communities we serve,” said Erin M. Smith, senior vice president of external affairs and chief talent officer at SoCalGas. “Brotherhood Crusade supports so many families and communities, and we’re excited to support the creation of a safe and inspirational space where this deeply valuable work can continue.”
The event featured remarks from community leaders, garden tours, and student-led presentations on the importance of fresh produce and natural healing. The garden will also host community receptions, movie nights, and educational programming focused on nutrition, environmental stewardship, and mental wellness.
