SoCalGas Joins Forces with Labor Community Services to Help Address Hunger at “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive
June 26, 2026
Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) once again joins forces with Labor Community Services (LCS) to support the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. This year, SoCalGas brought in 100 volunteers to help sort and organize over one million pounds of food donations collected across Los Angeles. SoCalGas also presented a $25,000 donation to LCS to help purchase additional high-need food items, supporting thousands of families facing food insecurity.

SoCalGas volunteers, led by interim president and chief operating officer Rodger Schwecke, supported sorting efforts at the Bell processing site, helping ensure food reaches local pantries quickly and efficiently. “This effort shows the power of working people coming together for one another,” said Yvonne Wheeler, president of the LA County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “When labor, community partners, and volunteers unite, we can make a real difference for families across Los Angeles who are facing tough choices every day.”
“Every pallet of food sorted today represents relief for a family navigating difficult circumstances. We’re deeply grateful for volunteers and partners, like SoCalGas, whose support allows us to provide assistance to the those facing food insecurity within our communities.” said Norma López, executive director of LCS.
“Union members take care of their communities—it’s who we are, and today is a great example of that,” said Bill Gilbertson, president of UWUA 132.
“Our employees showed up ready to make a difference, and that effort will translate directly into meals for families who need support right now,” said Rodger Schwecke, interim president and chief operating officer at SoCalGas. “It’s a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we work alongside our labor and community partners.”
Food insecurity remains a significant challenge across Los Angeles County. According to a 2025 USC Dornsife study, one in four households (24%) experienced food insecurity, reflecting continued affordability pressures despite some improvements in access to healthy food.
While nutrition insecurity improved—dropping from 29% in 2024 to 21% in 2025—many working families still struggle with the rising cost of food, housing, and everyday essentials.
Nationally, more than 47 million Americans face food insecurity, underscoring the importance of community partnerships that help connect families with needed support.
SoCalGas continues to support the communities it serves through charitable giving, volunteerism and programs that help customers manage their energy use. In 2025, SoCalGas contributed $7.2 million in charitable giving, including $3.8 million supporting social impact initiatives. These charitable contributions are funded by shareholders, not customer rates.
