Honor Rancho Compressor Modernization Project
Commitment to the Community
SoCalGas is committed to conducting construction activities safely and responsibly. Work is being planned and carefully managed to minimize potential impacts such as noise, traffic, and other short term disruptions. The company will continue coordinating with regulatory agencies and local officials and will share updates with the community as the project progresses.
This investment reflects SoCalGas’ ongoing commitment to delivering safe, reliable and affordable energy for the communities it serves. By making targeted improvements to critical infrastructure, SoCalGas is helping maintain safety, strengthen reliability, and manage long-term energy costs for customers.
Project Background
The Honor Rancho Storage Field has been operating safely and reliably since 1976. The modernization of the nearly 50-year-old infrastructure is required to comply with new South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) air emissions requirements. In June 2022, SoCalGas submitted a Permit to Construct application for the Honor Rancho Compressor Modernization Project. The main purposes of the project are to:
- Comply with SCAQMD Rules 1110.2/1100
- Modernize the Honor Rancho Storage Field through the replacement of aging natural gas fueled compressors with a combination of new natural gas fueled and electric driven compressors and other innovative technology that will achieve significant reductions in NOx emissions
- Enhance reliability by modernizing aging equipment and ancillary systems

Construction Underway – February 2026
Construction of the Honor Rancho Compressor Modernization Project is underway. This project will replace older equipment with newer, more efficient technology, helping improve system reliability while meeting today’s environmental standards.
Current work includes preparing the site and relocating existing pipelines and facilities to support the next phase of construction. Crews are also completing grading and site preparation for the new Edison Retention Substation.
As construction progresses, updates will be shared on key milestones.
Permit to Construct Issuance – January 2026
In January 2026, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) issued a Permit to Construct for improvements at the Honor Rancho facility. This approval followed a comprehensive assessment to ensure the project meets stringent regulatory requirements. Obtaining the permit marked an important milestone and allowed construction activities to commence under clearly defined conditions designed to protect public health and the environment.
Why This Project Matters
The Honor Rancho facility plays a key role in supporting natural gas storage and delivery throughout the region, particularly during periods of high demand.
Modernizing this equipment helps improve overall system reliability while reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency.
Compressors at Storage Facilities
Compressors provide the mechanical means to inject natural gas into underground storage reservoirs, playing a crucial role in the overall safe, reliable and affordable operation of SoCalGas’ natural gas system.
When customer demand on the gas system requires additional supply, valves and other equipment at SoCalGas’s storage fields can be activated to allow natural gas to flow from the natural gas storage reservoirs into SoCalGas’s transmission and distribution system.
