Refueling Your Natural Gas Vehicle at Home

Customers with natural gas vehicles (NGV) may choose to install a refueling appliance that uses their existing natural gas supply so that they can conveniently refuel at home.

Professional installation of the home refueling appliance is required. Check with the manufacturer or installer for any necessary electrical or plumbing requirements or regulations needed for the device.

Gas Rate Options for Home Refuelers

After installing a home refueling device, homeowners have three gas rate options.

  1. Stay on the GR residential billing rate
  2. The monthly meter charge is approximately $5 per month. However, if you exceed the “baseline” amount of natural gas usage, the rate will jump into a higher cost second tier.
  3. Change to the residential NGV billing rate (G-NGVR). The meter charge for this rate is higher than the GR rate at approximately $10 per month. However, the natural gas transmission rate is lower and remains constant regardless of the number of therms used. There is no second-tier pricing. The entire home’s natural gas usage will be billed at the G-NGVR rate. This option is only available to residential customers.
  4.  Add a second gas meter at your residence with the commercial NGV billing rate (G-NGV), which has a meter charge of $13 per month, in addition to the $5 per month charge for the GR rate from the original house meter. With the G-NGV rate, however, the gas commodity is billed at cost with no markup. A second meter is usually installed on a branch next to the existing meter and must be paid by the customer up front.
