Natural gas service plays a critical role in supporting electric generation projects under 20 megawatts (MW) by providing a reliable and efficient fuel source. Establishing service involves a defined planning and evaluation process that assesses site feasibility, system capabilities, and project requirements. The steps describe how a project progresses from initial evaluation through engineering, contracting, and construction.
How to Get Started
The steps in establishing gas service for electric generation projects less than 20 MW:
1. Complete Preliminary Site Evaluation (PSE) Form
• An Account Executive (AE) will contact you to assist with completing the PSE form. The PSE review typically takes approximately 20 days to complete, depending on the complexity of the request.
2. Account Executive Review of PSE Results
• The AE will contact you to review the PSE results and discuss available service options, requirements, and potential next steps.
3. New Service Application
• Based on the results of the PSE, if you wish to proceed with formal planning and engineering, the AE will provide guidance on completing the online New Service application.
4. Formal Engineering and Planning
• SoCalGas will formally engineer and plan the proposed new service based on the PSE parameters, assumptions, and limitations. This process includes analysis of required facility improvements and development of estimated construction costs. Completion of this step culminates in the creation of a fully collectible New Business Agreement.
5. Execution of New Business Contract
• Once the New Business Agreement is executed and funded, construction activities can commence.
The steps in establishing gas service for electric generation projects greater than 20 MW:
1. Customer Submits Request for Capacity Study
• The customer submits an EG Project Fact form for evaluation of the proposed EG load on the SoCalGas system. Following presentation of the Gas Feasibility Study results, the customer provides approval to proceed with the gas installation process.
2. Phase 1 – Collectible Work Authorization (CWA)
• The SoCalGas Transmission Technical Services team conducts a field visit at the proposed site to collect required project and site information.
• The customer funds the detailed engineering study and the procurement of any long‑lead materials or equipment.
3. Phase 2 – Collectible Work Authorization (CWA)
• The customer funds Phase 2 activities, including the purchase of materials and all construction‑related labor.
• A formal construction schedule, including start and completion dates, is established.
4. Noncore Service Internal Approvals
• Execution of the gas transportation contract and authorization to initiate construction activities.
• Establishment of customer credit with SoCalGas Credit and Collections.
