New Research on Methane Emissions

Learn about the latest research on methane emissions from the local distribution of natural gas.

On April 7, 2015, SoCalGas® hosted a webinar that illustrated the latest research on methane emissions from the local distribution of natural gas, and demonstrated how the data was used to estimate emissions from distribution systems nationally.

The webinar featured Washington State University’s lead researcher for the new study* that measured methane emissions from local natural gas utility distribution systems, a representative from the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and a SoCalGas representative who reviewed the research findings, research methodology and implications for California’s methane emissions policy.

Presentations

(Moderated by Deanna Haines, director of natural gas engineering, SoCalGas)

  • Decreasing Methane Emissions for Natural Gas Distribution Systems* - Dr. Brian Lamb, Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, Washington State University
  • Review of a nationwide field study to better understand methane emissions associated with the distribution of natural gas
  • Methane Pollution Science Studies Across the Energy Sector* - Tim O’Connor, senior attorney and director, California Climate Initiative, Environmental Defense Fund
  • Review of the EDF studies of the various segments of the natural gas supply chain
