Project Background

SoCalGas will soon begin work on a safety upgrade to its natural gas system at 5005 Noble Ave. in Sherman Oaks.

This property will serve as a permanent location for inspections and related equipment, allowing SoCalGas to move these activities off public streets and reduce future disruptions for neighbors and commuters.

SoCalGas first introduced this proposed project to the community in 2022 and has since been actively advancing the effort through acquiring the land, planning, permitting, and coordinating the anticipated activities. As we move forward, we want to keep residents informed about the new timeline, why it's needed, and what to expect.

Historically, performing required pipeline inspections at Noble Ave. and Valleyheart Dr. has significantly slowed traffic flow and affected the local community.

Because the 5005 Noble Ave. property sits above critical natural gas infrastructure, it allows SoCalGas to safely access and inspect pipelines throughout the neighborhood, as required by the California Public Utilities Commission.

These inspections occur every five to seven years. In the past, this work typically lasted several months and resulted in noise, traffic impacts, and recurring construction in the area. Once this project is complete, most inspection activities will take place within the facility’s fenceline, reducing impacts to the community.

The project includes:

  • Installation of new, automated safety valves that allow SoCalGas to monitor and operate its system remotely as part of SoCalGas’ Pipeline Safety Enhancement Plan (PSEP); and
  • Construction of a permanent pipeline inspection facility.

Projected Schedule

The initial work will involve demolishing the existing home at 5005 Noble Ave.  This work is estimated to take approximately two months to complete.

Construction to install the new equipment is estimated to begin in November 2026 and will take approximately four to six months to complete.

SoCalGas will engage the community to help make the new facility’s exterior design visually appealing, compatible with the surrounding neighborhood, and reflective of the community’s character.
