City of El Monte Transportation Services

  • El Monte
The city of El Monte Transportation Services Division manages a variety of public transportation programs serving the city’s residents and visitors. This includes operating five El Monte transit routes and providing transportation for youth, senior, and disabled residents’ programs, among other services. The division also coordinates with regional transit providers and maintains the city’s transportation vehicle fleet.

El Monte has pledged to do its part by utilizing cleaner energy options for the community; one way to accomplish this is by making the city’s transportation fleet cleaner. The city already has a compressed natural gas (CNG) station and wanted to explore additional alternative fuel options. El Monte applied for the Carl Moyer Program grant offered through the South Coast Air Quality Management District to expand fueling options with renewable natural gas (RNG). SoCalGas assisted the El Monte Transportation Services Division by providing guidance to the city throughout the application submission process. El Monte received notification of award approval in early 2021.

The funding will help build a brand-new RNG fueling station conveniently located within El Monte’s Public Works Yard. The city owns over 20 CNG transit buses. Additionally, the new station will be accessible to the public so that other CNG vehicles can fuel as well. By switching to RNG, El Monte will be eligible to receive credits and incentives, which it can use to support the local community.

As one of the first cities in California to utilize RNG in its fleet, El Monte hopes to promote its use to others and demonstrate that RNG can be an effective energy option in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
